About

Nancy Van Zyl

Occupational Therapist

I was born, raised, and schooled in South Africa, which I am pretty sure is one of the most vibrant and beautiful places on earth.  Over the past ten years my family and I have happily settled into living in Powell River/qathet on BC's Sunshine Coast.  We are grateful for how the people of this special coastal town have welcomed us and made us feel at home here too.  Our hearts can belong to two places, I'm learning.

Since qualifying as an OT twenty years ago, I have curiously gained experience, skills, and knowledge in working with children with diverse support needs. I am excited to continue learning and growing as a therapist in the ever-evolving landscapes of neuro-science and human development.

Over the years I have been continuously inspired by the commitment, dedication, compassion, and impact of many OT's who have crossed my path or whom I have admired from afar.  Thank you to each one of them for inspiring and guiding me, for believing in OT, and for making the magic undeniable.

Outside of work, I love reading, hiking, browsing local stores and craft markets, or spending time with my favourite people; my husband and our three children, my dear parents, and my wonderful friends.

Nancy's Philosophy and Approach

I believe that every child deserves to be loved and accepted exactly the way the are.  Because I understand that every person's brain and body processes the world differently, I celebrate that every child responds to life in a unique way.

I always use the child's interests and motivations as starting point for gaining skills that will build resilience and help them live their most competent and meaningful life.

My OT practice is:

  • child-centred and family-centred

  • play-based

  • neuroscience informed

  • rooted in Ayres Sensory Integration theory

  • neurodiversity-affirming

  • trauma-informed

  • culturally sensitive

My special interests include:

  • Neurobiology of Attachment

  • The DIR®:Floortime™ Model

  • Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD, and neurodiversity

My goal is that OT will always be a safe haven; a place that is full of hope and free of judgement.

I am on the Registry of Autism Service Providers (RASP) in BC, Canada.

Autism Handbook for Parents in BC, Canada.

Chrissy Hinatsu

Administrative Assistant

Originally from North Vancouver, Chrissy and her family have spent the past nine years exploring all the beauty that British Columbia has to offer. Two years ago, they found their forever home in Powell River, and they couldn’t be happier. After earning her BA in Early Childhood Education, Chrissy spent 12 years working with families in a variety of roles, including The PACE Program, Infant Development, and Supported Child Development. When she’s not working, you can find her enjoying outdoor adventures with her husband and two kids—whether it’s hiking, hunting for sea glass on the beach, or baking up something delicious at home.
